The project that was the most difficult for me was the perspective piece because It’s hard to make It look like certain objects, like the ones I chose, like they are coming up out of the page when they are in fact on a 2D surface. Prisma’s are a good material to use on pieces that include a very different array of colors, like on the subject matter I chose for this project. I chose this subject because I felt as if it was a unique idea that I could use to show my talents in creating texture, different shades and of course , perspective. Overall, It was challenging to get everything in the right place and create the exact perspective of an object that’s not straight forward. I over came this by using different shades, highlights and pencil techniques to show the objects that were closer or farther behind. I found it difficult to make some of the objects as realistic as the others where because of where they were placed or different pieces of them showing or not. But at the end of it all I felt as if my piece flew well together and I was happy with the outcome.
I would describe my artist style as colorful and lighthearted. I like to incorporate certain colors and styles and mediums to create a specific feeling in each piece. I think to be successful as an artist , you have to open your mind and explore different ideas that you can add to your art, the more out of the box the art, the more interesting and attention catching it is. I find it rewarding being able to get certain ideas or ideas through to people with art. It’s nice to have a talent people can appreciate but with practice and patience with yourself you can be successful with art no matter what. I usually pick ideas that highlight my best techniques which I would describe as graphite drawing and work with prisma color it’s also the ones that I enjoy and interest me as well; I work well with shading and prisma help me do that with use of color as well as the control of a pencil I appreciate. Through art I have learned many different skills and techniques I will take with me my whole life and practice throughout my work I’m sure and my hobbies as well. I also learned an appreciation of art as a whole and others work in seeing the skill and hard work that goes into it and that inspires me.
In my opinion I don’t believe that my portfolio highlights all the skills I got through this art class. Some of my pieces weren’t as well executed as I’d hoped in the end. But it also helped that I had to do challenging pieces I wouldn’t normally do because it gave me future technical reference. But it does reference the new things I did learn in things I’ve never fully practiced or mastered. One of these was my self portrait - I’ve never learned how to do that before and I will use that skill a lot in future art.
My favorite medium to work in is pencils - graphite or prisma color. I enjoy it because i have better control in creating even pencil strokes, shading and value. I got lucky in getting to practice all of these materials throughout the semester.
